Power of Display 69: Funeral Museum at the Vienna Central Cemetery, 21.7.2015, 18:00.
Martina Griesser and Monika Sommer (schnittpunkt ausstellungstheorie & praxis) in a conversation with Helga Bock (Funeral Museum) and Virgil Widrich (checkpointmedia).

In the public perception, death is as inseparable from Vienna as St. Stephen's Cathedral. The Funeral Museum, founded in 1967, owes its existence to the myth of the city's own particular relationship with the cult of the dead and the passion of a private collector. In 2014, the museum moves to the Central Cemetery and adopts a new strategy near the final resting places. It sees itself as a visitor centre and shows various aspects of bereavement with the aid of 250 exhibits. schnittpunkt focuses on questions such as: Who is the museum's target group? What does it entail when a general contractor takes on the redesigning of a company museum? What role is played by multimedia methods of communication? What are the disparities between the nature of the exhibits and the audio and video installations and how can they be reconciled? Can a museum function with no supervision? Will the collection be expanded?
On the "power of display" tour, schnittpunkt sheds light on the structural and thematic dimensions of this multifaceted project and deals with aspects relating to curating and designing the presentation as well as the implications of overlaps in the way an artist and a curator understand their roles. What is the relationship here between the tasks of a curator, the overall artistic concept and individual works?

To mark the 50th Viennale, ORF Kultur presented treasures of Austrian avant-garde cinema spanning some five generations. The programme began at midnight on Monday 22 October 2012. The spotlight was on works by young filmmakers. "Kein MTV ohne Kurt Kren" is the rubric used by international critics for this world-acclaimed genre from Austrian cutting rooms.
The programme was presented by filmmaker Virgil Widrich,  who observed that "Whereas feature films deal with the conscious, the avant-garde chafes at the unconscious. That often makes it sinister, but also very appealing."

Vienna according to checkpointmedia – Media based City Tour
On 6 December 2011 Virgil Widrich led a group of students from the Hani Rashid architecture class (University of Applied Arts Vienna) through Vienna city centre to two very different scenes of checkpointmedia's work. In the
Mozarthaus Vienna (exhibition architecture by Gustav Pichelmann) the focus was on recreating a historical personality using new media in a listed building.

The approach adopted at the Visitor Centre in the Parliament building was entirely different: under the direction of the architects Geiswinkler&Geiswinkler a new structure was built underneath the old historic building in which the history and modus operandi of democracy in Austria are presented with the aid of media. The excursion was rounded off by a talk given by Agnes Hannes in the checkpointmedia offices.

vor – BILD – end
Visualisations in science and art
Visual perception is a key process for human beings. Consequently, images play an important role in both science and art.

In science, images are primary data or serve as visualisations that help to make sense of information. In research, images are accordingly found at the beginning and end of a process of recognition. Images as works of art can be understood as the culmination of creative activity but can equally serve as the inspiration at the beginning of a creative process.

Curating the film series "Carte blanche vs brown thoughts" at Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.

Austrian films have been dealing with "brown thoughts" for many years, whereas "brown" does not have much in common with the act of "thinking". In a long sequence in the film "Autumn 95/Fall 95" we can get a notion of what kind of people were attracted by events with Jörg Haider in 1995, and what they had to say. Today we can see many other people around Haider, who had not yet come to the forefront in 1995.
"Zero Crossing" is situated on the other side of the spectrum of opinions; in equally long sequences, it is banning the instantaneous disgust in March 2000 on film. The state of shock of the interviewees then has today – two years after the Freedom Party has entered the Austrian government – given place to a common paralysis. The opponent has, in the meanwhile, become powerful: in Austria, we were first with a right wing government. Now, there is not only Haider, but there are also Berlusconi and Bush. Those people are going to stay with us for a while because difficult times are heydeys for bad politicians. On the other hand, difficult times are also heydeys for good films – and nine of those can be seen at Clermont-Ferrand. They are entirely different films, but what they stand against is always the same.
Many thanks to Amour Fou Filmproduktion, Meter, Navigator Film, Sixpack Film, "Die Kunst der Stunde ist Widerstand" and Schnittpunktfilm.

Lecture "How to write interactive dialogues?".
Writing interactive dialogues seems to be impossible. How can a conversation contain numerous possibilities without being arbitrary at the same time? In the interactive dialogue scenes the CD-ROM "Robbi – a CD-ROM adventure story" the characters in many scenes speak only when instructed by a mouse click, the user can even decide who, when and how often the character speaks. Despite these options, the talking animals have themes and thoughts supporting both the personality of each character while advancing the story. With a budget of 5 million Austrian Schillings "Robbi – a CD-ROM adventure story"is one of the most elaborate multimedia products ever made in Austria.
